Emotional Regualtion and Impulse Control

Classes Start January 2026!

At SHIFT Canine Training, we believe strong communication and joy in working together are at the heart of lasting behavior change. Training isn’t just about checking boxes on obedience cues — it’s about helping your dog feel regulated, confident, and ready to learn.

Some dogs struggle with overwhelming arousal, frustration, or stress not because they don’t know better, but because they aren’t sure how to feel calm enough to choose better. That’s where emotional regulation and impulse control come in. This 6-session class series is designed to give you the tools, understanding, and skills to support your dog’s internal world — not just their outward behavior.

We’ll explore why you can’t obedience your way through reactivity, and how to create conditions that actually help dogs cope with big feelings in real-world situations.

What You’ll Learn

The science of emotion and behavior — how a dog’s internal state influences what they can offer you in the moment

Signs your dog is over threshold and what to do before behaviors escalate

How to build impulse control skills that feel safe, fun, and achievable

Strategies that support calm engagement — not suppression of emotions

Practical tools to help your dog recover quickly and willingly after things get intense

What You’ll Practice

Games and exercises that build self-control, focus, and coping skills

Predictable structure that helps dogs feel safe and confident

Owner skills for reading body language and responding thoughtfully

Ways to build choice and agency in training — so your dog learns to want to regulate

Who This Class Is For

This class is perfect for dog owners who:

Want to understand the why behind reactive or impulsive behavior

Have tried obedience cues without lasting behavior change

Believe in science-based, force-free methods

Want to build a deeper, clearer communication with their dog

Important Notes

This class is relationship-focused and scientifically grounded. You won’t just learn cues — you’ll learn why those cues work (or don’t) in moments of stress, and how to support your dog’s emotional growth so they can make better choices when it matters most.

At SHIFT Canine Training, we help dogs feel safe, understood, and ready to learn — because calm minds make lasting change.

*Our Pre-requisite for our Emotional Regulation and Impulse Control Class is Obedience 101*

Upcoming Class: Starts January 10 2026

Location: Shape Up Agility- 55116 RR 261 Sturgeon County, AB T8T 0Y3

Class dates: Jan 10,17,24,31; Feb 7, 28

Time: 2:30pm-3:30pm

We welcome any breed, size, or age of dog

*All dogs must have up to date vaccinations*

I require proof of up-to-date Rabies and Distemper/Parvo Vaccinations to be submitted to me before our classes. Although the Kennel Cough vaccination is not mandatory- I do highly recommend it.

*Our classes are not suitable for Highly Reactive or Aggressive Dogs*

If your dog barks and lunges at other people and/dogs- please call us and we will discuss what is the best course of action for your dog. Our group classes generally have at least 5 other dogs and their owners, so we need to set everyone, including your dog, up to win. A group class is not necessarily the right first step for your dog to learn with us. We need to meet your dog where they’re at- and that’s in a few private lessons. Once your dog is ready to work around other dogs- we will happily welcome them into class.

*A Note on Missed classes*

If you miss a class, you will still receive the recap notes that get sent out to all the students.

We do not offer free make-up classes.

You can also reserve a spot make it up for a small fee- or if there is another class on the same session as the one you’ve missed- you may be able to join that.

Please talk to your trainer if you anticipate missing any classes.
